Vanakkam
High-Heels <Wondering what? Let me explain> !
I’m
so sorry. I can’t write much now. I’m on the plane, travelling! Our flight was delayed due to the depression
formed in the vicinity of Chennai. It rains there at this time of the year!
<The experience the North-West monsoon…> Many flights got delayed I had
to spend most of my time chatting and yapping around the airport. Mom’s pretty
flustered with me around her. She says “Another word and my ears are going to
bleed!” But I’m not the one can be easily muted. I pretended as though I didn’t
hear a word. Then I brought a topic that interested her… I told her I wanted to
learn Tamil as we’re going to stay in Chennai. That made her involved and I’ve
learnt some words so far… It’s not that tough actually… Hi/Namaste is
“Vanakkam” in Tamil. “Nandri” is thank
you. It’s “Kaalai” for morning <the ‘lai’ must be lightly pronounced, if
it’s stressed it gives a different meaning it seems… Kaalai <with the
stressed lai> means Bull!>
“Maalai” stands for evening. But mom says they don’t use it much. It’s
all pure tamil, not parts of speech. Some words are actually similar to hindi…
Like for night it’s “Raathri” instead of raath in hindi. I think I’ll learn it
pretty quickly… Actually now I’m writing from the restroom, I don’t want mom
looking into you and I don’t want to skip writing too… Oops, someone’s tapping
the door..Looks like I’ve taken much time talking with you! Bye! Naan poitu
varren <I’ll go and come back>
